At a time when transportation was scare, Don Francis Ganlath began the first operation as a personal business in “thotalaga”. The name “thotalaga” was derived from two Sinhala words namely “ thota” and “langa” which literally means “River Bank and Closer” respectively. As the business resided close to the river bank transport was easy, specially to transport goods. Boats and small vessels were quite famous for transportation. It was rather a local port. The location gained popularity for “Trade” goods. And also did helped Ganegoda Appuhamilage Don Fransis Ganlath to carry out his business.

First established by G.A.D.F.Ganlath in 1920. The company initialy hired pulling carts to deliver good of the people from Totalanga River Bank to the market place in Gas Wall Street. This was no adequate transport to move logs which came through the river. Making use of company’s property, Fransis began a warehouse to provide storage services for these immovable logs

Gradually the warehouse was converted into a Saw Mill under the official name “D.F.Ganlath” in 1930’s. this led to the inception of the Timber business with the cutting of logs into usable shapes and been sent to destinations within the island with their pulling carts.

In years to come, the business was handed over to his son, Ganegoda Appuhamilage Don Douglas Stanislaus Ganlath, with whom his second son Ganegoda Appuhamilage Don Andrew Ganlath partnered. Consequently Don Andrew Ganlath got hold of the business and company name changed into D.A Ganlath in 1967.

Drawing more strength and support from community as a responsible and reputed cooperate, the company developed it’s name to Ganlath & Sons and was run by Andew and his son Ganegoda Appuhamilage Don Hillary Ganlath thereafter. Proving 47 years of excellence in timber and transportation industry, Ganlath and sons were the first importer of timber to Sri Lanka in 1973.

Since 1973 till today, the younger brother, the present proprietor, Ganegoda appuhamilage Don Antony Tissa Ganlath is successfully nurturing the business under the name of “ Ganath Timber & Transport Services “ enabling a world class lifestyle. Today, the company is a global team with backing of three generations and counting, nearing 100 years of caliber in transportation and timber industry.
